How much of our ego creates resistance to our art?
Yes, there is the “I can’t make enough money at my art to show the world that I am a success” because so many of us hinge our self worth on our possessions and standard of living. Many people are more willing to work a profession they don’t like to have all of these things, than to work at something they love where they have a different quality of life while still having the possibility of making good money.
But I’m also talking about how ego can cut off the flow of inspiration to us. There is a saying that EGO “Edges God Out”. I think God is an overused word with many interpretations, but for me it means that energy flow that comes from “who knows where’ that creates the inspired art. The essence. Worrying that your stuff isn’t good enough, as good as the next persons or good enough to make money will cut off the flow. That’s resistance. But also, if you are successful, ( because you are working out of the flow) the ego can step in and start taking credit for it and “pop”, the inspired flow gets shut down. You can no longer service the work with a swelled head full of ego.
How do we get rid of it? Feel that you are at the service of something else. When we were doing Rocko, we felt that we were helping ( as other shows were as well) to pull TV animation out of the uninspired dark ages. We were on a mission. But ego did start creeping in to our work, and that’s one of the reasons I shut it down.
I can look back at the work I felt was done in an state of flow, and others that were produced from ego. There is a connection that more people make to something that comes from that tether to inspiration.
We all need to reconnect. In many areas of our lives. It’s available for the asking, and costs less than a big screen TV.

When you speak of ego creeping into the work, what exactly do you mean? That is, what are the signs that that is happening? Not asking for specifics, of course, but how did ego start to affect Rocko’s production? I guess I’m just trying to understand that principle; was it sort of a case of “too many cooks” all trying to get their ideas across?
Thanks for being part of that new wave of animation. I really regret not being part of working on Rocko, but at least it was there to inspire me when I was a kid.
Regarding your previous post, many congratulations on the book deal!

When you have a team of people working together, it’s important to check your ego at the door. We had a dream team crew of very talented people, who started getting attention from other studios because of the work we were doing. Then, as I posted before, you get tired, grumpy, and then start bitching about other shows getting more of this or that. Sibling rivalry and such creeps in. Pretty soon it’s hard to work as a team. Plus, as much as I tried divert it, the media loves to give all of the credit to the creator of a show, where we all know it’s a team effort.

A lot of my favorite shows have suffered creatively, because once the team behind them hit the nerve they were aiming for, they no longer needed the fans to slow them down.
Was there ever any friction between the Rocko and Ren & Stimpy crews? I understand since both were run by Games, some of the Rocko folk started creeping into Ren & Stimpy’s yard towards the end of that show’s production.

It does stink that many value a job that gets them what they want rather than a job thats fun, many people that were succesful enjoyed their jobs and “success in life” isn’t about money or a fancy Benz, its about creating an influence and finding inner peace, money is nothing but paper.

Joe,
I hate to disturb you but somebody screwed with the Camp Lazlo theme song inappropriately by playing it backwards (If you are offended at sexual innuendo and language, then WATCH AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!).

Post this on your blog and put the same warning as me on the post.

That’s just the nature of youtube, people with way too much time, nothing original, and windows movie maker. Trying to find an original short animation is almost impossible.

Rocko’s Modern Life was my favorite show when I was four years old. Now I’m thirteen and I still like the show. It’s to bad it’s not on Nick anymore. Rocko’s Modern Life was a real good one. Even my mom liked it. Camp Lazlo is also a good one. My two favorite episodes of Rocko’s Modern Life were “Love Spanked” and “Sand in Your Novels.” I like how the show is humorus for children and adults.
