I’ve always been a fan of Javier Mariscal of Spain. I’ve followed his brilliant outpourings of character and design since the 90′s. I always knew he wanted to get into animation, and he had a TV project or two. But he finally produced this fantastic   Chico & Rita, which was nominated for a 2012 Oscar for animated feature film. And what a schmuck I am for taking so long to watch it. ( Attribute it to waiting for films to come to Netflix.) When it first came out, I merely soaked in the design. Part of it was fear of not wanting it to be like Ralph Bakshi’s “American Pop” ( which I was not a fan of). But I have to say I loved it. It was a beautifully told story, and I remained entrenched in the characters. It’s very difficult to pull off sexiness in an animated character , but Rita is that.

I always love experiencing animated films that show what animation can do outside of the usual mass marketed big studio fare. This is a treat. Check it out if you have not already done so. Not necessarily for the cartoon fan, but more for the animation and love story fan.

Hmm. I will have to check it out. However “adult feature length animated romance” movies aren’t exactly my thing. But I will also queue it, and watch it someday.

This is one of the few times I really enjoyed the rotoscope technique and it’s because of the stylization, same thing goes for the Fleischer Brothers. This film also has beautiful backgrounds and the 3d effects help give the illusion of space, sort of like a multiplane camera.

It looks like they used CG for the background buildings and cars to move the camera around and maintaining the depth, while using the flat art for the characters. The media mixes well. And yes,the rotoscope does not irritate or at times even seem rotoscoped.

  3. Awesome website you have here but I was wanting to know if you knew of any message boards that cover the same topics discussed here? I’d really love to be a part of community where I can get feed-back from other experienced individuals that share the same interest. If you have any recommendations, please let me know. Kudos!
