I’ve always been a fan of Javier Mariscal of Spain. I’ve followed his brilliant outpourings of character and design since the 90’s. I always knew he wanted to get into animation, and he had a TV project or two. But he finally produced this fantastic Chico & Rita, which was nominated for a 2012 Oscar for animated feature film. And what a schmuck I am for taking so long to watch it. ( Attribute it to waiting for films to come to Netflix.) When it first came out, I merely soaked in the design. Part of it was fear of not wanting it to be like Ralph Bakshi’s “American Pop” ( which I was not a fan of). But I have to say I loved it. It was a beautifully told story, and I remained entrenched in the characters. It’s very difficult to pull off sexiness in an animated character , but Rita is that.
I always love experiencing animated films that show what animation can do outside of the usual mass marketed big studio fare. This is a treat. Check it out if you have not already done so. Not necessarily for the cartoon fan, but more for the animation and love story fan.
